When it comes to Content Management Systems, WordPress is the usual go-to. WordPress is used by nearly a third of all sites hosted on the web. WordPress is also quick to install, and is a lot easier to use, due in part to its ubiquity. Thousands of tutorials are available for every aspect of WordPress. However, even this titan has its rivals. Drupal, while nowhere near as popular, has managed to carve out a niche. Why has it managed to win over some website owners?
When it comes to scalability and flexibility, Drupal is a perfect choice if you know how to tinker with it. While the vanilla package is a pretty limited system, you have a lot of room to experiment with the wide variety of Drupal plugins, extensions and modules available.
You’ll need to be good with computers to use these modules well, which is admittedly where it falters. But it allows you to create a site that’s perfect for your needs without any extraneous features that you don’t need.
Security is one of the biggest factors determining your choice of CMS, and Drupal wins hands down. WordPress sites has been quite vulnerable to hackers in the past, usually due to outdated plugins. Drupal, on the other hand, has been used for a number of government institutions around the world: Colorado in the States, Victoria in Australia, Bermuda, the list goes on.
It should be noted that updating it to its latest version can be tricky, but updating as soon as you can will keep your site safe.
It’s undeniable that Drupal has a much steeper learning curve than WordPress. Most users have to avoid habits they learned from other CMSes. But with that complexity comes a comprehensive feature list, allowing you to really tinker with your site. Stuff like user permissions, creating page templates and content for financial backers is all included in the vanilla package.
So is Drupal the right choice for you? The only serious barrier to using it comes from its difficulty, as it requires some coding ability to get it all running. But if you’re looking for a comprehensive, flexible and secure CMS, Drupal may be perfect for you.
